We were requested to perform an existing conditions survey and prepare a conceptual layout for ground internments on a portion of the property that contained a four to one (4:1) slope with fifty feet of rise. The field survey was textbook, locating adjacent mausoleums, grave sites, and access steps with the use of GPS equipment. Through the use of a creative design and the terracing of five 3-foot high walls, the design yielded 295 proposed ground internment sites. We then performed the construction stakeout of all proposed features.
Cypress Hills Cemetery opened in 1851 and encompasses 225 rolling acres. With the increasing demand for internment space within the City of New York, the cemetery sought to develop its more challenging areas.
